Editorial

April 27, 2012

These pictures are from Flair magazine’s April issue in which photographer Thomas Cooksey shoots Ali Stephens with styling by Vittoria Cerciello. I love the light in this editorial: the whole look is dictated by the setting sun and the angles that bounce off her face. The blues and apricots of the clothes are mirrored in the background which adds to the strong sense of place; you almost get the feeling that an electrical storm is on its way.  I have to say I can achieve a similar look with my hair after a day’s surfing!

Blackbook magazine’s April/May edition, photographed by Jason Kim and styled by Christopher Campbell, brings a tough edge to Spring’s pastels.  The ‘sleeves’ of tattoos are so unexpected in this feminine editorial  and I don’t think I’ve seen such a colourful, decorative and almost ‘cheerful’ use of tattoing before. It’s a really refreshing idea and against the lace and flowers works wonderfully.

Kate Winslet Cover plus

April 3, 2012

I have been waiting for April’s Elle China to come out for  a long time. I worked on this shoot before Christmas, assisting the stylist, Miranda Almond; Giles Bensimon was the photographer.  It was a great experience and I specially love the orange sequin Elie Saab dress, which was sent from Paris for this shoot.

Editorial

March 28, 2012

This editorial is taken from March’s Numero, shot by Sebastian Kim with model Kasia Struss. I love the mix of colour and  black and white in this series, highlighting both the geometry of the background and the sunlight and shadow. There’s a real sense of location here, as well as a time of day. The earrings are amazing and I like the way they are repeated throughout; they make such a great silhouette against her face and the top bun, emphasising the athleticism of the shapes.

We had a beautiful day of weather on Monday and I was lucky enough to be able to see the whole of London bleached in spring sunlight from the top of a hotel. I was on a shoot for a European publication, sorry for the elusiveness on names, places etc, but as ever, it’s all hush hush pre publication. Amazing location in a penthouse, incredible weather, some Alaia shoes I would die for and Valentino straight from Paris. Not bad for a day’s work!

Cover Try

February 6, 2012

This cover is a much more high fashion look for Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima and I like it. Shot by André Passos for February’s Brazilian Vogue, it is the perfect carnival mix of sun and seduction.  She looks both animalistic and feminine and the saturation of warm colour makes this a cover you’d definitely pick up to look at the editorial.

After the Italian Vogue Karlie Kloss disaster, this editorial of her makes me smile. Taken from Vogue Germany and shot by Alexi Lubomirski, this shoot is gorgeous. I love the Asian feel, the exotic setting, the fresh flowers, the steamy, almost scented atmosphere. The styling and make up are both pretty full on but there is a simplicity about her face and her modelling that adds just the right amount of restraint. The dog is amazing too and reminds of the children’s story my Mum used to read to me called ‘What-a-Mess’.

I absolutely love this editorial from the December How to Spend It, shot in The Missoni Hotel, Kuwait by photographer Andrew Yee and styled by the consistently creative Damian Foxe.  The story is all in the mixing of the patterns, the interplay of colours, the make up, the wigs.  It could have been overwhelming but instead is stimulating through its artistry.

December 14, 2011

This cover is taken from Numero China’s December edition and shows a sexy Doutzen Kroes in Louis Vuitton, shot by Tiziano Magni. I like how simple this cover’s lay out is, just a hat and not much other styling. It works well because of the different textures on the hat, the contrast against her skin, and because the make-up is strong and her face so focused. She looks like a classy call girl disguised as a bellboy. It’s a highlight from the December cover offerings.

Fashion getting it Seriously WRONG

December 9, 2011

These pictures are taken from Vogue Italy ‘Body by Kloss’, shot by Steven Meisel.  They have been circling the internet for a while now and each time I see them I get more and more incensed! The model, Karlie Kloss,  is nineteen years old and is offically hitting the big time, but for me these shots are promoting a totally negative body image. Having worked with Karlie myself over a year ago I can tell you she was not this thin then and was a lovely sweet girl to work with. It looks as though she has since lost weight and l feel she should not have walked for Victoria Secrets this year as I thought she looked far too thin for VS ‘curvy’ girl type. Surely no one believes these photos promote the next ‘Body’, that coveted title given to Elle Macpherson all those years ago? If this is the body that we should be impressed by in 2011, then I could never eat a normal meal again. To suggest that jutting hipbones and a pronounced ribcage is the sexy new look just fuels the condemnation of the fashion industry’s presumed obsession with the scarily thin. The rest of the editorial, showing a laughing relaxed Kloss fully clothed, is so much sexier and more relatable to as a young woman, so why mix them with the more naked images. Is this a shoot about her body or a fashion story?  Of course a lot of the stark angles on her body are accentuated by the lighting and no doubt there has been a certain amount of retouching to create all the shadow, but in a way isn’t that worse? This isn’t beautiful, artistic or fashion forward.  These images have been found on pro anorexic websites and Vogue Italy have had to remove some of the pictures from their website. Franca Sozzani who campaigns against these websites should have been aware that this editorial is no help.
